Finding Rest, Margin, and Joy as a Christian Counseling Practice Owner

Running a Christian counseling practice means you carry more than appointments and admin tasks. You carry people’s stories. You carry the emotional weight of healing work. You carry the responsibility of stewarding a business that exists for the Kingdom and not for yourself. All of that makes rest feel impossible and sometimes even irresponsible.

In this week’s episode of Freedom Fire, Austin and I shared two moments that reshaped how we think about rest.

The first happened during a service day with a group of high school boys. We spent the morning landscaping at a retirement community and then escorted the residents to their weekly bingo time. Watching those boys step out of their comfort zone and watching the elderly residents light up reminded us of something simple but profound. When you step out of your routine and give yourself fully to something outside your normal responsibilities, God meets you there.

Serving others became a surprising reset. It opened our minds. It softened our hearts. It reminded us what really matters.

The second moment was a silent retreat I took during a stressful point in our business. We had so many decisions to make and so many directions we could go. Stepping away for a weekend felt counterproductive, yet it became the most productive thing I could have done. God used that silence to re center my soul and realign my focus with Him.

These experiences led us to reflect on margin. Emotional margin. Financial margin. Spiritual margin. Without it, even small disruptions can wreck us. But when we intentionally slow the pace and give our souls space to breathe, God can speak into our work in ways we could never manufacture.

As a Christian practice owner, you deserve rest. You need rest. And more importantly, God desires to meet you in that rest.

If you ever feel guilty stepping away, hear this. Rest is not a break from your calling. Rest is part of your calling.

May you find moments to pause, breathe, and let God restore the joy that fuels your work. And if you feel alone in this journey, our community is here to walk with you.
